We are big believers in time management. Unscheduled phone calls eat away at employees’ time, interrupt their workflow, and causes the business to experience a mental cost in distractions and stresses of uncompleted tasks. Scheduled video meetings and email, on the other hand, are far more flexible and thorough, and increase productivity.
While back and forth discussion is often necessary, scheduled Zoom video calls avoid workflow interruption and give the participants visual cues that can help predict changes in conversation and gauge the interest level of the person with whom you are speaking. With phone calls, you don’t have the advantage of non-verbal clues, which leads to awkward silences, interruptions, and speaking out of turn. While non-verbal cues obviously aren’t communicated via email either, they’re not nearly as important because of their ‘turn-talking’ nature: with email, we can take our time to respond thoughtfully, knowing you can later do the same. No awkward silences, no interruptions.
